Ideas for Memorial Day Weekend in Denver

Memorial Day weekend is a particularly special time for many people. We remember America’s fallen heroes and put our patriotism on full display. Memorial Day in Denver also unofficially kicks off summer in the Mile High City. Over the three-day weekend there will be some exciting things happening in and around the city. Enjoy a weekend with family friendly events and special services. Here are some things to do over Memorial Day weekend:

1. Memorial Day Parade and Tribute Ceremony 

  • When: May 26
  • Where: Civic Center Park, Downtown Denver
  • Cost: Free

Denver will celebrate Memorial Day 2012 by commemorating those who lost their lives while serving our country during the Denver Memorial Day Parade on Saturday, May 26 at 10 a.m. The parade is followed by the Veterans Memorial Day Tribute at the Veterans Monument. The parade will be held in Downtown Denver in and around Civic Center Park.

 

2. Downtown Denver Arts Festival

  • When: Friday, May 25 – Monday, May 28, 2012
  • Where: Denver Pavilions, Downtown Denver
  • Cost: Free

Throughout Memorial Day Weekend at the Denver Pavilions, mix and mingle with thousands of fellow art lovers at the Downtown Denver Arts Festival, featuring more than 150 of Colorado’s best artists. One of the Mile High City’s premier cultural events, the 2011 festival attracted close to 150,000 people, who supported Colorado’s creative community by purchasing more than $500,000 worth of art.

 

3. Colorado Rockies vs. Houston Astros

  • When: Monday, May 28, 2012, 1:10 p.m. and 6:10 p.m.
  • Where: Coors Field
  • Cost: Tickets are $4 – $100.

Catch the Rockies versus the Astros at Coors Field during a special matinee Memorial Day game starting at 1:10 p.m. and a second game at 6:10 p.m. Following the evening game, fireworks will light up the sky. Before and after, Lower Downtown bustles with rooftop dining and drink specials.

 

4. Denver Day of Rock

  • When: Saturday, May 26, 2012, 2:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
  • Where: Five stages along the 16th Street Mall in Downtown Denver
  • Cost: Free admission

For the third year in a row, the 16th Street pedestrian mall will be transformed into a massive block party with 25 free rock concerts throughout the day, performing on five stages, for the annual Denver Day ofRock. ‘80’s rock giants TOTO are headlining this year, in addition to such favorites as Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Samples and Fishbone. Some of the Mile High City’s most talented performers will also take to the stage, including John Common, Something Underground and Air Dubai.

 

5. The Big Eat

  • When: Sunday, May 27, 2012, 2 p.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Where: Union Station
  • Cost: $25 admission covers food. Drinks are $5 each.

The second annual Big Eat event features 36 restaurants, as well as local breweries and wineries. Sponsored by the Independent Restaurant Network, the event showcases local restaurants including Euclid Hall, Linger and the Wynkoop.
