We are thrilled to celebrate our 120th Anniversary with the debut of the highly anticipated 1892 Artesian Lager. Crafted by Wynkoop Brewing Company in honor of the Brown Palace’s historic anniversary, this beer is is a tribute to Denver, Colorado and the tradition of micro-brewing. This limited-edition retro beer is brewed with water from the Brown Palace’s underground aquifer. The goal of the partnership between The Brown and Wynkoop was to create a beer that echoes the early beers that were served in the Brown Palace’s first years. Colorado brewers have long boasted about the state’s natural water, so this craft adds a niche, local story to the tradition.
1892 Artesian Lager showcases one of the Brown Palace’s finest hidden treasures. In 1888, Henry C. Brown had a well drilled 780 feet deep on the site of his early Denver, Colorado grazing land. Four years later, the Brown Palace Hotel was built at that site and the water from the well was used to supply the hotel. Today the well continues to provide water to Brown Palace and guests drink straight from the aquifer by taking a sip from the hotel lobby water fountain. The pressure gauge for the well can be found just outside the entrance to Ship Tavern.
This draft-only beer is perfect for summer drinking with light flavors of blonde malts andoats, slight sweetness, and restrained hops. Clear and filtered, this beer has an attractive straw color, white head, and champagne-esque effervescence. 1892 is fermented with lager yeast at a slightly warmer temperature than modern-day lagers, to mirror the early days of Denver, Colorado’s brewing history.
This is the second beer Wynkoop has crafted for the Brown. Last fall they used honey from the Brown Palace rooftop beehives to create Rooftop Honey Saison, a Belgian-style saison that will be brewed again this fall.
1892 Artesian Lager is only available on tap at the Brown Palace’s Ship Tavern and Wynkoop Brewery and is sure to be the highlight of this summer’s Denver nightlife. Stop by and taste Denver, Colorado history.
