“Going Green” For Every Season

We are proud to announce that we received the Good Earth Keeping Award from the Colorado Hotel & Lodging Association at a recent luncheon at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.  CHLA first recognized sustainability efforts by hotels in 2008 and now five years later, the commitment and innovative approaches to greening only strengthens.

In an effort to raise awareness of sustainability with guests and contribute to the Denver community’s efforts to reduce waste, we formed a committee to “green” the property and create a plan to maintain future sustainability efforts for the 120-year-old hotel.  The committee outlined goals to be achieved by 2015 including: an 80% waste diversion rate through recycling, and composting; reduce electricity consumption by 15%; water consumption by 16% through facility updates and awareness training with staff and more.

well meter

The rooftop bee colonies contribute to sustainability efforts on property by protecting the balance of the eco-system, the Artisan well provides the water supply on property, guest cards are made from biodegradable material, cloth hand towels are stacked in public restrooms, and all rooms have recycling an reuse programs. Plus, all used in-room amenities are donated and kitchen cooking oils are returned to the vendor to turn old oil into bio-diesel. Overall the waste management practices save a projected 1,008 trees, 27,000 gallons of gasoline, 414,000 gallons of waters, 215,000 kilowatts of energy and 146,000 pounds of carbon emissions this year alone!

We are thrilled to continue sustainability efforts and support the Denver community in reducing waste and going green.

October Seasonals

Photo courtesy of 303 MagazineWith the arrival of fall, our beer mood adjusts as well. The lime-infused summer beers are behind us as we shift into autumnal seasonals to warm our souls and prepare us for the colder months ahead. Colorado is home to some of the best micro-breweries in the country, all boasting their version of pumpkin ales and fall seasonals. You really can’t go wrong when sipping a fall varietal in the Mile High. Here are some of Colorado’s seasonal suds that are sure to warm you up from the inside-out.

Fall Seasonals on tap at the Ship Tavern:

Wynkoop Brewing Company (Denver, CO) – Colorojo Double Red

The dark, double red beer is a medium-bodied amber ale brewed with rare American hop varietals. The caramel, sweet malt, pine and toffee aromas leave a big autumn taste with a bittersweet finish.

Wynkoop Brewing Company & The Brown Palace (Denver, CO) –Traditional Palace Caskcraft

In partnership with Wynkoop Brewing Company, this customized version of the London Calling IPA was created for the series of special cask beers for the Ship Tavern. This traditional cask brew uses lemon grass and spice notes to create an “extra special bitter” British-style amber ale.

Other Colorado seasonal brews to try:

Avery Brewing Company (Boulder, CO) – Rumpkin

Pumpkin ale aged in rum barrels. This is the first member of the Annual Barrel-Ages Series and is brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm and spiced with nutmeg cinnamon, and ginger.

Left Hand Brewing Company (Longmont, CO) – Oktoberfest

Toasty malt flavors dominate up front, and noble hops lead to a spicy, clean lager finish.

Ska Brewing Company (Durango, CO) – Autumnal Mole Stout

Three varieties of chile peppers (Ancho, Guajillo and Hatch Green chiles) combined with cocoa nibs and spices make this southern Colorado ale as important to fall as football is to Sunday.

Epic Brewing Company (Denver, CO) – Imperial Pumpkin Porter

Pumpkin pie beer? Yes, really. This fall beer features the beer as much as the pumpkin and tastes like a chocolate cake with pumpkin spices.

Raise Your Glass for the 26th Annual Champagne Cascade

Completed PyramidKick off the holiday season at the 26th Annual Champagne Cascade on Sunday, November 3rd in the Brown Palace Atrium.

With the swift swipe of an antique Napoleonic saber, a master swordsman will sever the necks of Moet et Chandon champagne bottles. Once opened, the bubbly is carefully poured into the uppermost glass of a 6,000-glass pyramid towering two stories high in the hotel’s stunning atrium lobby.

More information on the fundraising efforts associated with this event will be released later this month including detailed information about the organization and the connection to the Brown Palace.

The Champagne Cascade, which starts at noon, is open to the public on floors four through seven and will feature live jazz and entertainment. Exclusive VIP tickets will be available for purchase and offer views from the mezzanine level and include unlimited champagne, beer, wine, hors d’oeuvres and desserts.

To make reservations for VIP viewing, guests can visit www.brownpalace.com to purchase tickets.
